What Happens During a Dental Check-Up?

Never been, or been away for a long time? Here is a step-by-step guide to a routine dental visit.

If you are nervous or simply curious, knowing what happens at a check-up can help. A routine visit is usually calm, gentle and quicker than people expect.

What Happens During a Dental Check-Up?

1. A conversation

Your dentist starts by asking about your general health, any medicines you take and any problems you have noticed, such as pain, sensitivity, bleeding gums or bad breath.

2. A look at your teeth

Using a small mirror and a gentle probe, the dentist checks every tooth for signs of decay, cracks, wear and the condition of any fillings or crowns.

3. A check of your gums and mouth

Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. The dentist looks for redness, swelling and bleeding, and also checks the tongue, cheeks, palate and throat area for any unusual changes.

4. Cleaning where needed

If there is plaque or tartar, your dentist may recommend or perform a scale and polish to remove it.

5. Advice and a plan

At the end, your dentist explains what they have found, answers your questions and agrees a plan with you: whether you need any treatment, what the options are and when you should come back.
