Crowns and Bridges Explained

Crowns protect damaged teeth and bridges fill gaps. Learn when each is used and how they are made.

Crowns and bridges are long-standing, trusted ways to restore teeth that are badly damaged or missing.

Crowns and Bridges Explained

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap shaped like a tooth that covers a damaged tooth completely. It restores the tooth’s shape and protects it from further damage.

When is a crown used?

A crown may be recommended for a tooth that is cracked, weakened by a large filling, heavily worn or discoloured, or that has had root canal treatment.

What is a bridge?

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching an artificial tooth to crowns or supports placed on the teeth next to the gap.

How they are made

The tooth is shaped, an impression or scan is taken, and the restoration is made to fit. A temporary one protects the tooth in the meantime.

Looking after them

Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and under the bridge, and attend regular check-ups. Avoid biting very hard objects.

It is cleaned just like your natural teeth, but pay special attention to the gum line where the crown meets the tooth.
